PowerBar Energy Gel

It’s been a bit since I’ve posted a legit product review, and although I mention my use of PowerBar Energy Gels on a pretty regular basis, I’ve yet to really express my love for the sugary gel. I want to share with you my review of what has become the staple nutrition of my training and racing this year. From all the science involved in each packet, to the taste, to what it allows me to do, these gels surpass all my preconceived notions of energy gels; here’s why.

I’ll do my best to keep this simple and not get too deep into the science of electrolytes and carbs needed to fuel our (endurance athletes) training and racing. Just know that we need both of those elements in certain ratios in order to perform at our best. Straight from the PowerBar web site:

That means that in each packet, we’re getting the electrolytes needed to keep our muscles and nerves communicating clearly, and helps keep cramps away.

As we train, we also burn a pretty decent amount of calories. While our body always has an almost infinite amount of calories stored because of the non-viceral fat, and our body’s ability to break down tissue for fuel, it tries not to tap into the needed structures. Instead, we want to introduce readily available calories and carbohydrates that go directly to fueling our work. Our body is very good at doing just that, and the PowerBar gels have just what our body needs.

Having the separate pathways decreases the chance of ‘GI stop-up’, an issue all athletes have had at some point in time. The multiple pathways to get the fuel to our boy systems also allows us to push further and longer in our races and training because we have easily and readily available energy. All we have to do is take in one of the packets of sugary goodness every 20-45 minutes. “What?! I’m allowed to eat like every 30 minutes?!” Yeah…I don’t think any of us will have a problem with that.

I’ve been using these gels all season, and haven’t had any any kind of negative effect. No GI issues, no bonking, and even on sessions over five hours, they stay delicious.
